Defining the Type of Research that is Eligible to Win a Nobel Prize

The field of research is competitive and stressful. Individuals understand somewhat about the pressure they are undertaking when they sign on for graduate school, but they believe the benefits outweigh the disadvantages because they want to make a difference in the world and have a job that lets them test their intellectual skills.

Some people aspire to go even beyond these important goals and seek out research that opens them up to accolades and awards. The most prestigious of these is the Nobel Prize. If you’re determined to focus on experiments that set you up for potential nomination or selection of this coveted award, you should know what it takes to get on the list.

What is the Nobel Prize?

It seems like the Nobel Prize has been around forever because it has been awarded 605 times since its inception. In reality, though, it’s a practice that started in 1895 when Alfred Nobel donated the majority of his sizable fortune to go towards individuals who made significant strides in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace.

From there, the Sveriges Riksbank, or central bank of Sweden, established a prize in their name in 1968, to be dedicated in memory of Alfred Nobel and be awarded to someone in the field of Economic Sciences.

Types of Previous Awards

To get a solid understanding of what it takes to be nominated for, and ultimately win, the Nobel Prize or Sveriges Riksbank award, it helps to see what characteristics were included in the work of previous winners.

You can break down all 605 winners if you have the inclination, or focus on those who won the category of the scientific field you are in. As a general breakdown by category, you might be more likely to receive the award in Physics (114), Chemistry (112), Medicine (111), and Literature (113) than in Peace (101) or Economic Sciences (52). It should be noted that there does not have to be a winner in each category every year. If there is nothing suitable that can be agreed upon as a significant impact, that category would be skipped.

What it Takes to Win This Award

Obviously, if there was a formula to win this often lucrative award, currently at ten million dollars for a full prize, people would be lining up to do the work. While there’s no specific path to success, there are some characteristics that are seen across the board in Nobel laureates.

Essential traits in all categories include factors such as:

●      Work that advances human knowledge

●      Work that creates a solution to global problems

●      New shifts in thinking in a field of science

●      Individuals who actively engage in their research

●      Leaders who actively encourage and work towards brokering peace

●      Those who have good public communication and increased visibility

●      Individuals who are so immersed in their work that they don’t even realize they are vying for the award

There’s a huge mix of character traits that you must have beyond impactful research and work. You can’t force or fake how important fixing problems in the world is to you, and you can’t fool others into believing that you care. However, if you really want to win the Nobel Prize, the best way is to keep being a good person and attempting to make an impactful difference to society.
