A A Mamun, son of Md. Darbesh Ali and Rizia Ali, was born in 1966 at Dhamrai, Dhaka. He is now a Professor (selection-grade) of Physics and Director (in-charge) of Wazed Miah Science Research Centre, Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He completed his B. Sc. (Hons.) and M. Sc. (Thesis) in Physics from Jahangirnagar University, and secured first class first position in both B. Sc. (Hons.) and M. Sc. (Thesis) Examinations. He successfully completed his Ph. D. in Plasma Physics from the University of St Andrews (UK) under a very prestigious scholarship, Commonwealth Scholarship that he was awarded (by an international open competition) by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (UK).
Prof. Mamun, for his outstanding contribution in complex/dusty plasma physics, was awarded a number of very prestigious post-doctoral fellowships (by international open competition), e. g. Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship by the AvH Foundation (Germany), Commonwealth Post-doctoral Research Fellowship by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (UK), Max Planck Research Fellowship by the Max Plank Institute (Germany), etc. to carry out the advanced research in dusty or complex plasma physics in Germany and UK.
Prof. Mamun has been awarded a number of national and international awards/prizes in recognition of his excellent research works in plasma physics and of his outstanding contribution to the general progress in physical sciences and related technology in Bangladesh through his research and teaching. The most important of these awards/prizes are (for examples): i) The Bessel Research Award-2009 (Germany), [representing a cash of Euro 45,000.00, and an opportunity to carry out advanced research in Germany for a prolong period of time] in recognition of his past accomplishment of research and teaching; ii) The BAS-TWAS Gold Medal-2004 (Bangladesh-Italy) in recognition of his great contribution in physics; iii) The BAS Gold Medals- 2011 (senior group) for his excellent research works and great contribution to general progress of science and technology in Bangladesh; iv) The Best Young Physicist Prize-2000 by the ITCPP (Trieste, Italy) in recognition of his pioneering contribution to the study of nonlinear phenomena in complex plasmas; v) The University Grants Commission Prize-2008 (Bangladesh) for the best research article in physical sciences in 2008. It should be mentioned here that until now Prof. Mamun is the first Bangladeshi scientist who got the Bessel Research Prize.
Prof. Mamun is a coauthor of a text book entitled `Introduction to Dusty Plasma Physics, which is first book in dusty plasma physics and is now being used text book for graduate course in many universities all over the world. He has attracted the attention of all most all the plasma physicists (working in complex or dusty plasmas) not only by this first book written on complex or dusty plasma physics, but also by some his theoretical work which are experimentally verified. The output of the Google Scholar search (made on 15/03/2020) shows that the total citations of Prof. Mamun’s research work exceed 13,500 with h-index 51, and i10-index 238.
Prof. Mamun presented invited talks and chaired scientific sessions in many international plasma physics conferences held in different western countries (viz. Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Greece, Portugal, etc.). He is now leading a very strong and active plasma physics research group (consisting of a large number university/collage teachers and MSc/MPhil/PhD research students) in his own country Bangladesh. Though he lives and works in a less developed country like Bangladesh, he has direct collaboration with different well-known plasma physicists in different parts [viz. UK (Oxford, Cambridge and Scotland), Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Georgia, Portugal, Venezuela, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, India, etc.] of the globe.
Prof. Mamun was also appointed the Guest Editor of a special issue of the Journal of Plasma Physics (published by the Cambridge University Press, UK). He is the Associated Editor of 'Review of Modern Plasma Physics' (published by Springer Nature, Japan) and an Editorial Board Member of 'Advances in Astrophysics' (published by Isaac Scientific Publishing, Korea). He is the fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences as well as Bangladesh Physical Society.
Prof. Mamun, because of his excellent academic background and extra-ordinary research/teaching experiences, was offered many attractive permanent positions by many research institutes or universities of western countries like Germany, UK, USA, etc. But he declined to have those permanent positions because of his firm commitment or strong determination to serve his own country (Bangladesh), and because of his deep love for his students, his university campus, and his own country where he has been grown up.
