I studied the evolution of irrigation practice in a huge irrigation scheme, the Rio Dulce Irrigation Scheme, at Santiago del Estero, Argentina. From a socio-technical approach I focused my research in how without a solid political program the main stakholders, politicians, irrigation agency, large and small farmers modeled the evolution of the water management in a changing historical context. Output of the socio-technical intervention were assesed in terms of the dominant modernization paradigm of the end of XX century.
During a 2 very intensive years, I attended 21 subjects (as basic as mathematics, chemestry or physics like applied subjects as crop water requirements, irrigation, drainage, groundwater flow) and prepared a major thesis and a minor thesis for getting the MSc degree. The major thesis dealed with the study of how much rice area could be irrigated safetely in the unregulated Rio Yaguarí River watershed in Uruguay. For the minor thesis I developed a water balance model for cropped soils as a tool to help farmers´descision to practice supplementary irrigation.
