I have a PhD in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. My research focuses on the intersections of civil society organizations and security governance, particularly post-9/11 international and state level counter-terrorism policies and practices.
Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) activities in Northeastern Nigeria are distorting the socio-political and economic fabric of the state. The nefarious activities, which include indiscriminate violence are crippling the Nigerian security architecture and are contributing to increased crime. To address this terrorism-hydra-challenge all hands should be on deck. Ideally, the government and key stakeholders such as civil society, specifically Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should be cooperating and working as partners in addressing terrorism problem – but the reality is far from that.
he internet is a vital part of human innovation and freedom, as well as a tool of oppression, chaos, propaganda, and suffering. It can be either positive or negative disruptive force, depending mainly on where the control resides. Recognising the potentiality of this potent tool of protest, African governments and leaders have embarked on various means to limit access to the internet, particularly social media during significant events. Internet disruptions have become a common feature of the African continent in recent times ever since it was initially used in Zambia in 1996. Fast-forward to 2016, when there was an upsurge in the number of internet disruptions in Sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, in the last three years, Africa has had more digitally repressive states just as it has politically repressive states. For instance, in 2019 alone, there have been internet censorship in countries such as Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Chad and Zimbabwe
