About
I work in extragalactic observational astronomy with particular interest in clusters of galaxies which, as the largest gravitationally bound structures known, provide clear constraints on the formation of structure and on the composition of the universe. My research is not confined to one wavelength but builds on observations in several domains from radio to optical and X-rays.
Research Interests
Dr. Gioia works in extragalactic observational astronomy with particular interest in clusters of galaxies which, as the largest gravitationally bound structures known, provide clear constraints on the formation of structure and on the composition of the universe. My research is not confined to one wavelength but builds on observations in several domains from radio to optical and X-rays. Dr. Gioia has been involved since the early 80-ies in surveys performed by the space X-ray missions. She has acquired the necessary expertise in handling large datasets and in the analysis and interpretation of the data from such surveys. She was among the scientists who designed and built the EMSS, or Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (Gioia et al. 1990, ApJS, 72, 567), the first large serendipitous survey ever made with the imaging detectors on board the Einstein Observatory. The EMSS was such a success that inspired many EMSS-style cluster surveys, all based on ROSAT archival deep pointing images. The ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole survey is the second large survey Dr. Gioia has been involved with. She has used complete samples of radio and X-ray sources extracted from such surveys to study the evolutionary properties of the different classes of astronomical objects (from AGN to clusters of galaxies). The best known result from her work is the discovery of the ”negative” evolution of X-ray selected galaxy clusters in the EMSS (Gioia et al. 1990, ApJ, 356, L35), later confirmed by the ROSAT NEP survey data (Gioia et al. 2001, ApJL, 553, L105). She has also collaborated with colleagues from the INAF-Milano to the construction of the REX (Radio Emitting X-ray) source survey, designed to search for X-ray selected BL Lac objects and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) in pointed images of the ROSAT satellite, and to study the luminosity functions and cosmological evolution of BL Lac objects and AGNs. The scientific aims of such surveys is to place observational constraints on the current theoretical models of emission, and to constrain the cosmological parameters.
