Ngai Weng Chan is a professor at the Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang, Malaysia. He is active in lecturing, research and writing and NGO work. He is also a consultant in the field of Hydrology, Climatology, Environment and Water Resources Studies. He has taught as a Visiting Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology (2006/2007) and at the University of Memphis, USA (2000/2001). He was previously a Vice-President of the International Water Resources Association (2013-2015), and a Member of International Association of Hydrological Sciences and Member of International Water Association. He is active in civil society work related to water resources management, being currently President of Water Watch Penang (WWP), Treasurer of Malaysian Environmental NGOs and a member of Malaysian Water Partnership and Malaysian Water Association. He has completed more than 100 research/consultancy/community projects and published 29 Books, 98 Chapters in Books, and more than 100 professional papers in academic journals.
As a full professor, I worked on many research grants such as LRGS, FRGS, Sumitomo, Toyota Foundation, Hasanah Foundation, Water Watch Penang Grant, Universiti Sains Malaysia Short-Term Grant, Research University (RU) Grant, Asian Institute of Technology Grant, Fullbright Research Garnt, etc.
As Associate Professor I was involved in many research projects ranging from water resources management to climatology, flood management, environmental mangement, ecotourism management, etc at the Universiti Sains Malaysia from 1996 to 2001..
As a senior lecturer I worked on various research grants at the Universiti Sains Malaysia in several areas in environmental management, water resources management, climatology, flood management etc from 1986 to 1996.
As a PhD research student I worked on the topic A contextual analysis of flood hazard management in Peninsular Malaysia at the Middlesex University in UK from 1992 to 1995.
Worked on a Masters Thesis research topic titled "Drought Management in Peninsular Malaysia" from 1977 to 1981. From 1981 to 1986 I was involved with various research at the University of Malaya as a research assistant in climatology and other aspects of physical geography.
