Ping Jack Soh was born in Sabah, Malaysia. He received the bachelor and master’s degrees from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2002 and 2006, respectively, and the PhD degree in electrical engineering from KU Leuven, Belgium in 2013.
He is currently an Associate Professor in the University of Oulu, Finland, and a Research Affiliate with KU Leuven. He started his career as a Test Engineer in Venture Corp. Malaysia from 2002 to 2004 and joined Motorola Solutions Malaysia as an R&D Engineer In 2005. He was then a Lecturer in Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) (2006-2009) before moving to KU Leuven as a Research Assistant (2009-2013), Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2013-2014). He went back to serve in UniMAP as a Senior Lecturer (2014-2017) and an Associate Professor till 2021, prior to his current role. To date, he has won, lead and successfully completed a handful of internationally, nationally, and industry-funded projects in his areas of research interest: wearable antennas; compact satellite antennas; flexible metasurfaces; on-body communication; electromagnetic safety and absorption; and wireless and radar techniques for healthcare. This resulted in a granted patent and five others filed. He has also successfully (co)supervised 11 PhD and 13 MSc research projects to completion.
Dr. Soh was the recipient of the URSI Young Scientist Award in 2015, the IEEE MTT-S Graduate Fellowship for Medical Applications in 2013 and the IEEE AP-S Doctoral Research Award in 2012. He was also the Second Place Winner of the IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition in 2013. Three of his (co)authored journals were awarded the IEEE AP/MTT/EMC Malaysia Chapter’s Publication Award in 2020, 2019 and 2018, and another two journals were also awarded the CST University Publication Award in 2012 and 2011. Besides receiving the Chapter’s Volunteer Award in 2020, he has also been recognised as Finalist/Semi-Finalist in several other IEEE- and IET-sponsored awards and competitions. He is a Chartered Engineer registered with the UK Engineering Council; a Senior Member of the IEEE; and a Member of the IET and URSI. He also serves in the IEEE MTT-S Education Committee and is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Numerical Modelling: Electronic Networks, Devices and Fields (Wiley).
